Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the Oradell Volunteer Fire Department (“OFD”), your interest to serve your community is appreciated and we hope you are ready to make at commitment to our department. We are currently seeking members for the following ranks:
Regular Membership
18 years or older. Responds to fire calls and actively participates in training, meetings, and committee work. Members are required to be residents of Oradell or an adjacent town. A physical must also be completed by your physician. All new Regular members are required to attend a state certified fire training academy to obtain their New Jersey Basic Firefighting Certificate. The Bergen County Fire Academy in Mahwah, NJ currently runs this class several times a year. This class currently runs for 6 months, with classes held in the evenings two times a week.
Day Membership
18 years or older. Responds to fire calls and actively participates in training. Members must be employed within the Borough of Oradell and a regular member of another fire department.
Junior Membership
16-21 years old. Responds to fire calls and actively participates in training. Members must be residents of Oradell and are preparing to become Regular Members. A physical must also be completed by your physician.
Application Process
No previous training or experience is required to become a member. The OFD will provide the appropriate guidance and training for new members as necessary for each of our membership types. Once accepted into the OFD, there is a one-year probationary period. This is a time for the department to evaluate you and for you to evaluate the department to be certain that this is the right fit for you. It is also required within this period that you complete the necessary training based on membership type. You are encouraged to participate as much as possible during this time so that you understand what type of commitment is involved with being a volunteer with our department.
The public service nature of our operation requires that we carefully screen applicants making your honesty and careful completion of this application required. Please complete the application and attach copies of any appropriate certifications or letters that may assist the OFD with your membership approval process.
New membership applications are reviewed on the second Monday of every month at our regular monthly department meeting. After the application is reviewed by the membership, you will be contacted to schedule an interview for us to learn more about you and for you to ask any questions that you might have. If accepted after your interview, your application will go to the Mayor & Council for final approval. Please expect at least 3 months for the entire application process to be completed.
